I have been working around Llyn Mair in Gwynedd, North Wales a lot lately. In a small are there is a lovely little lake, managed woodland walks, a sculpture walk, wild broad leaf and pine woodland and derelict huts - paradise for an aging landscape photographer. And there is a cafe near by!!!

While I was shooting the previous black and white image I decided to check if my 5x4 exposure techniques was still up to it. This was shot on Provia and processed in Technol chemistry. I thought that the wide contrast range would show up any problems with my technique, one the whole I am reasonably happy with the result. Shadow detail seems to be there in almost every area and the highlights have only burnt out in the extremes. One problem it has shown up is my scanner desperately needs replacing!

I returned to this wood after spending several days shooting in it last year. This time I was armed with my MPP and CHS Art 25. I like to return to locations, as I believe you always react in a different way to the familiar rather than the new. Personally I think that the shots of this hut from last year are not some of my better images! The CHS 25 seems to struggle a little in these high contrast places, the shadow detail is great, but the highlights burn out quite quickly. This was a real pain to print! Think I will try under exposing for some and pulling the processing for others, see which helps the most.

Two teenage girls seemed to think I was a little strange while taking this shot. What is odd about standing thigh deep in the sea with a 5x4 camera after sunset? Shot on an MPP Mk VII 5x4 using Adox CHS 25 Art, exposed for 3 mins at f32 and processed in Rodinal 1-50 for 9 mins constant agitiation.

It seems that you have to descend endless steps to reach this small National Trust owned beach. It is on the Lleyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales. But while you are there someone adds hundreds more steps! Well thats what it seems like when you are carrying a 5x4 on a tripod on a hot, sunny day. I shot this on my MPP Mk VII using Adoc 25 CHS Art using a 2x orange filter and an ND4, then processed it for 9 mins in rodinal 1-50 with constant agitation.

Once the light levels had dropped too much to work in the Lake District I headed for the coast. This was shot at 90 seconds as the water gently flowed around the rock.
